Literacy at Home

Posted on October 21, 2008.

Children learn language in many places. Mainly this is due in part to the fact that language is found everywhere. It is on food labels, clothing, billboards, signs, cars, the radio, the television and more. You might want to have some positive word labels around the house such as labeling the door and windows so that you can control what words you child is exposed to. This also helps with your child’s growing knowledge of words to increase. Some other things you can do at home to increase your child’s literacy is:

  •  Introduce your child to different mediums, like poems, songs, and different styles of books. (sensory, visual, and books without words).
  • Repetition of favorite books helps children develop key concepts of plot.
  • Point to words and follow them as you read, this helps draw the child’ attention to words and their meanings.
  • Read to your child as much as possible, or at least once a day.
